Pollution has become a worrying phenomenon due to its negative impact on health and environmental safety. Water and soil pollution occur when release various industrial waste, including leather industries.
In this research paper, some physicochemical properties were studied and the average concentrations of seven heavy metals were estimated selected.
This study was carried out on the residues of Al-Maher tannery in Lawdar city from October 2019 to June 2021.
Four representative samples (three liquid samples and one solid sample) were taken and analyzed in the laboratory and the characteristics such as pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD5), color, turbidity, hardness, and some negative and positive ions were estimated. A number of heavy metals (e.g. Cr, Fe, Zn, Pb, Cu, Ni, Ti) were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) instrument.
The results showed that all the studied physicochemical properties and minerals were above the standard limits for the quality of tanning residues.
The results of this research can be used to assist the government and tanneries in determining pollutants and treating wastewater before launching to the environment and use the optimal methods for treating the disposal of these wastes.
